Anxious About the Dentist?

9 October 2026

If the thought of going to the dentist makes you anxious, you are far from alone. Many people feel nervous about dental appointments, and for some it is enough to put them off going for years. At Coast, we work gently, explain things clearly and never rush, and many of our patients have been coming to us since we opened. A little knowledge about what helps, and what to expect from us, can make your first visit much easier. This post explains both, so you know what to expect before you come in.

Why people feel anxious

There are lots of reasons. Some people had an uncomfortable experience as a child. Others dislike the sounds and smells, or the feeling of not being in control, or the worry of being judged about their teeth. For some, it is the fear of pain, and for others it is simply not knowing what is going to happen, which is enough on its own.

Whatever the reason, it is real, and nobody at Coast will think less of you for it.

What helps

Small things can make a big difference. Telling us you are nervous, ideally when you book, means we can plan for it and give you a little more time. You are welcome to ask as many questions as you like, and to have things explained before we begin.

It can also help to agree a way of letting us know if you need a break, such as raising your hand. Knowing you can pause at any point often makes the whole appointment feel much more manageable.

What to expect from us

We take time to talk before we do anything, so you can tell us what worries you. We explain what we find and what your options are in plain English, and you are involved in every decision. Nothing is rushed, and there is no pressure to go ahead with anything on the day. You can take your time to think things over.

Ways to make your visit easier

  • Tell us you are nervous when you book, so we can allow extra time
  • Visit us for a look around, or a chat, before any treatment
  • Ask us to explain each step before we begin
  • Agree a signal, such as raising your hand, so you can ask for a break
  • Choose a time of day when you are less likely to feel rushed or tired
  • Practise slow, steady breathing in the chair, breathing out for longer than you breathe in
  • Bring headphones if listening to music helps you to relaxVisit us for a look around, or a chat, before any treatment
